Georges River Council
Hurstville sits in Georges River Council, formed from the old Hurstville and Kogarah councils, covering the ground between the Cooks River catchment and the Georges River. The soil is mostly Wianamatta shale over the ridge, with Hawkesbury sandstone appearing sharply as the land falls toward the river at Oatley, Lugarno, Como and Connells Point.
Two very different halves
The ridge and the centre. Hurstville, Beverly Hills, Penshurst and Mortdale are largely flat to gently sloping, on shale, with post-war housing. Access is generally straightforward — driveways a truck can use and side gates that take a machine.
The river side. Oatley, Lugarno, Como and Connells Point fall steeply to the water. Houses sit below street level with the garden below that again, and the vegetation shifts to sandstone species: angophora, Sydney peppermint, scribbly gum. There is frequently no vehicle route to the tree, so material is carried up stairs by hand. That difference alone can double the labour on an otherwise identical tree.
Redevelopment and strata
Hurstville's centre has been substantially rebuilt with apartment towers, and the surrounding streets have seen heavy duplex and dual-occupancy development. Much of the tree work follows from that.
For apartment and strata sites, the decision sits with the owners corporation before it reaches the council. Common-property trees need a committee resolution or a general meeting decision. It is worth grouping the site's tree work into one visit — mobilising once for eight trees is far cheaper per tree than eight separate callouts.
For development sites, removals are assessed within the application. The consent will name retained trees and usually require tree protection zones. Retained trees are commonly lost afterwards to root-zone compaction, severed roots and altered drainage rather than to the saw, which is an expensive way to fail a consent condition.
Foreshore and bushland
The Georges River foreshore and the bushland reserves around Oatley Park, Lime Kiln Bay and Gannons Park carry additional controls. Vegetation on or adjacent to those reserves is regulated more tightly than a garden tree mid-block, and some foreshore land is council or Crown land where no private work is permitted at all. Establish who owns the ground the trunk emerges from before arranging anything.
The trees
On the shale ridge: forest red gum and grey box remnants, plus the usual post-war garden planting of liquidambar, jacaranda, camphor laurel, privet and cocos palm. On the sandstone slopes: angophora, Sydney peppermint, red bloodwood and a banksia and casuarina understorey along the reserve edges.
Sandstone also means slower stump work, because the roots run into rock crevices and a grinder meets stone rather than soil.
