What this business actually is
Tree Loppers Sydney is a referral site. You ring or send an enquiry, and it goes to an independent tree contractor who works in your part of Sydney. That contractor quotes the job, carries their own insurance and licences, and does the work.
We say this plainly because the alternative — a site that implies a single fleet of trucks and a single crew — makes it harder for you to ask the right questions. Ask any contractor who turns up for evidence of public liability cover and for the qualification of the person running the saw before they start. A competent operator will not be offended by the question.
Why the council question comes first
Most of the frustration in Sydney tree work comes from people booking a removal before they know whether it is allowed. Every council here writes its own tree preservation order, and the thresholds vary enormously. Some regulate a tree at three metres tall; others leave everything under a much larger size alone. Some maintain a long exempt-species list that covers camphor laurel, privet and cocos palm; others do not.
On top of the council layer sit two state-level rules that catch people out. The NSW 10/50 vegetation clearing entitlement allows removal within ten metres of a home in mapped areas near bushfire-prone bushland, and it does not apply just because you can see bush from the kitchen window — the property has to fall inside the mapped entitlement area. And anything near a live Ausgrid conductor is not a tree contractor's job at all; that work needs an accredited service provider and usually a scheduled outage.
Sorting that out before a quote is written saves everyone a wasted visit.
How we think about the work
The honest position on lopping is that the word covers two very different things. Reduction pruning, done to Australian Standard AS 4373 with cuts placed back to suitable lateral growth, leaves a tree smaller, safer and still alive. Topping — cutting a canopy back to bare stubs because the tree is tall — produces a mass of weakly attached regrowth within a couple of seasons and creates the exact hazard it was supposed to fix. We will quote the first and argue against the second.
Similarly, a tree that is merely inconvenient is not the same as a tree that is dangerous. Leaf litter in gutters, shade over a vegetable patch and a few surface roots are maintenance problems, not removal problems, and in a strict council area they are very unlikely to get an approval.

What size jobs do you take?
Everything from a single dead wattle in a courtyard to multi-day removals of mature eucalypts over houses, plus scheduled maintenance for strata and commercial sites. Very small jobs are usually cheaper if you combine them, because most of the cost is getting the truck and crew to your street in the first place.
