The most exposed corner
Malabar sits on the coast south of Maroubra, wrapped around Long Bay and beneath Malabar Headland. It is in Randwick City, on Botany sand over sandstone, and it is about as exposed to onshore weather as anywhere in the Eastern Suburbs.
Everything about tree work here follows from that exposure.
What salt and wind actually do
Two distinct effects, often confused.
Salt burn. Onshore wind carries aerosolised salt that scorches soft new growth on the seaward face. The tree keeps growing away from the ocean, so the canopy becomes one-sided and the exposed face stays brown. Pruning the burnt growth off does not fix it — the next flush burns the same way, and the tree ends up with less foliage than it started with.
Wind pruning. Persistent wind kills the terminal buds on exposed growth, so the plant thickens and spreads laterally rather than growing up. That is why headland vegetation is low, dense and sculpted. It is a survival strategy, not a defect.
Neither responds to conventional pruning. What changes the outcome is a salt-tolerant windbreak on the exposed side and, more fundamentally, planting species that evolved for the position.
What survives
Coastal banksia, coastal tea tree, coastal rosemary, tuckeroo, Port Jackson fig, Norfolk Island pine and the native coastal wattles. All of them handle salt, wind and fast-draining sand.
Conventional garden exotics do not, however well they are watered and fed. A great deal of replanting in Malabar fails twice in the same position before anyone changes the species choice.
The headland
Malabar Headland National Park and the surrounding reserves hold remnant coastal heath and scrub of genuine ecological significance, and that land is public. No private tree work is permitted on it.
Private blocks adjoining the reserves carry coastal management and biodiversity considerations on top of Randwick City's ordinary tree controls. Randwick's significant tree register is also worth checking for any large specimen on your own land.
The work
Deadwooding and structural pruning on the trees that are established and coping. On a wind-exposed tree, thinning the canopy so wind passes through it rather than pushing against it is more useful than reducing its height.
Clearance pruning off roofs and gutters, which on a salt-exposed block is also about keeping corrosive leaf litter out of the guttering.
Palm removal. Cocos palm is exempt in most councils and is a weed problem in the coastal reserves, so removal is encouraged.
Replanting advice. Frequently the most useful part of a visit, because the species choice is the actual problem on an exposed block.
Access
Mixed. The flatter streets around Long Bay are workable. The clifftop and headland-facing blocks fall away sharply, with houses below street level and no vehicle route to the rear. Street parking is limited throughout.

Can anything be done about salt-burnt foliage?
Not by pruning. Salt aerosol scorches new growth on the seaward face and the replacement growth gets scorched as well, so cutting the burnt side back just resets the cycle with less foliage on the tree. What helps is a windbreak of salt-tolerant species on the exposed side, and choosing plants suited to the position in the first place.
Is the Malabar Headland vegetation protected?

It is not stunting from poor soil alone and it is not something to correct — it is how coastal vegetation survives the position.
