Ku-ring-gai, Willoughby, Lane Cove, Hunters Hill, Mosman, Hornsby
The North Shore is two landscapes stacked on top of each other. Along the ridge that carries the Pacific Highway — Chatswood, Roseville, Lindfield, Killara, Gordon, Pymble, Turramurra, Wahroonga — the soil is Wianamatta shale and the original forest was Blue Gum High Forest: Sydney blue gum, blackbutt and turpentine, thirty to forty metres tall. Plenty of those trees are still standing in back gardens on half-acre blocks with a 1930s slate roof underneath them.
Drop off the ridge into the gullies at Lane Cove, Riverview, Castlecrag, Hornsby Heights or Berowra and the geology changes to Hawkesbury sandstone. The species change with it to angophora, Sydney peppermint, scribbly gum and red bloodwood, and the blocks change to stairs, retaining walls and a forty-degree fall behind the house.
The councils
This is the strict end of Sydney. Ku-ring-gai is the most restrictive tree council in the state and behaves accordingly. Willoughby, Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and Mosman are all protective. Hornsby is more mixed — the bushland-interface parts of the shire are tightly controlled, while a suburban block at Normanhurst is more ordinary.
Practically: budget for the approval process before you budget for the crew. Strict councils frequently require a written report from a consulting arborist identifying a specific structural defect, and that is a separate paid engagement.
The work
Big shale-grown eucalypts over houses are the signature North Shore job, and they are almost always a rigging job rather than a felling job. The climber takes the canopy off in controlled pieces and lowers the trunk in sections against a friction device. Where the street and the driveway allow a truck-mounted elevated work platform or a crane, the same tree comes out in a fraction of the time — worth asking about, because the difference is often two days against half a day.
Deadwooding mature blue gums and blackbutts is the highest-value routine maintenance here. A dead limb in a forty-metre gum is heavy, brittle and drops with no warning, and removing them is far cheaper than any reduction.

The bushland interface at Hornsby, Berowra, Mount Colah and along the Lane Cove valley falls within mapped 10/50 vegetation clearing entitlement areas in places. Check your address on the NSW Rural Fire Service tool rather than assuming — the mapping has tightened and being near bush is not the test.

Is Ku-ring-gai really that strict about trees?
Yes. Ku-ring-gai regulates trees at modest sizes, protects remnant Blue Gum High Forest and Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest on top of its ordinary controls, and actively prosecutes illegal removal. Assume you need approval, assume you may need a consulting arborist's report, and budget several weeks before a crew can start.
Why can't a crane reach my tree?
Because a lot of North Shore blocks fall away steeply behind the house into a gully, and the tree is thirty metres below the driveway with no vehicle path to it. On those blocks the tree is climbed, dismantled in small pieces and carried uphill by hand. That is slow work, and it is why gully-block quotes look high next to a flat block in Ryde.
What is Blue Gum High Forest?
A critically endangered ecological community that once covered the shale ridge from Chatswood to Hornsby. Only fragments remain, mostly in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby, and they carry state protection on top of council rules. If your block has tall Sydney blue gums with blackbutt and turpentine on shale soil, treat every tree as protected until told otherwise.
