What makes eucalypts different
Sydney's gums — Sydney blue gum, forest red gum, blackbutt, spotted gum, scribbly gum, red bloodwood, plus the angophoras that everyone calls gums — behave unlike most garden trees, and removal reflects that.
The timber is dense. A metre-long section of green eucalypt trunk is extraordinarily heavy. That is why rigging matters: a piece that would be manageable in camphor laurel will go straight through a pergola if it is gum.
They shed limbs. Summer limb drop is a documented eucalypt behaviour, associated with hot still conditions, where an apparently sound limb fails without wind. It is not fully explained and it is not reliably preventable by pruning.
Branch unions vary. Some eucalypts form unions with included bark — bark trapped between two stems instead of proper wood — which is structurally weak and a common failure point.
They compartmentalise rather than heal. A eucalypt walls off damage instead of closing over it. Bad cuts do not get better; they decay inward.
How the ground changes the job
On Hawkesbury sandstone — the North Shore gullies, the Shire, the northern beaches escarpment — gums anchor by running roots sideways into rock crevices. The plate is wide and shallow. When one fails it tends to lift rock and soil rather than snapping, and stump grinding meets stone rather than soil.
On Wianamatta shale — the Inner West, the Hills, out west — roots go deeper into heavy clay, timber is heavier again, and the stump goes further down. There is also the soil-movement question: a large gum draws a lot of moisture out of reactive clay in summer, and removing it can allow the clay to re-wet and heave over the following seasons, which matters on shallow footings.
What the council will say
This is the part to settle first. Native eucalypts are the trees Sydney councils protect most consistently, and in the strict areas — Ku-ring-gai, Woollahra, Mosman, Willoughby — a mature gum is almost certainly regulated.
Beyond that, remnant vegetation may apply. Blue Gum High Forest, Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest and Cumberland Plain woodland are all critically endangered communities built around eucalypts, and fragments survive on ordinary residential land across Sydney.
Expect to need a written assessment from a consulting arborist identifying a specific defect. Amenity arguments rarely succeed on a healthy native.
How the removal runs
Almost never a straight fell. A climber removes the canopy in controlled pieces, then rigs the trunk down in sections against a friction device. Where a crane or elevated work platform can reach the base, sections are lifted rather than lowered and the job is far quicker.
Habitat is worth raising. Mature gums with hollows support possums, microbats and parrots, and some councils require a check before removal or ask for hollows to be retained as a habitat stem.
The alternatives
Before committing: staged reduction if the issue is size, systematic deadwooding if the issue is falling limbs, and removal of a specific defective limb if the issue is one branch over the house. All three are cheaper than removal and all three are easier to get approved.

Frequently asked questions
Are gum trees really more dangerous than other trees?
Not inherently, but they fail differently. Eucalypts shed large limbs, sometimes in still, hot conditions with no obvious trigger, and eucalypt timber is dense so a falling limb carries a lot of energy. Species with included bark at branch unions are more prone to whole-limb failure. Regular deadwooding addresses most of the real risk.
Can a gum be reduced instead of removed?
Sometimes, carefully. Eucalypts tolerate selective reduction to suitable laterals, taking no more than about a quarter of the live crown in a season. They respond very badly to topping, which triggers weak epicormic regrowth. If the problem is size rather than structure, staged reduction is worth exploring before committing to removal.
What happens to the root system after a gum is removed?
It stays in the ground and decays over years. Grinding takes the stump and reachable buttress roots to two or three hundred millimetres below grade, which is enough for turf. Deeper roots break down slowly. Most eucalypts do not sucker from the root plate once the crown is gone, unlike camphor laurel or privet.
