What Tree Lopping Costs and Why

2024-04-18

What lopping means, and why it matters to the price

The word covers two different jobs.

Reduction pruning shortens limbs by cutting back to a lateral branch large enough to take over. The wound is small relative to the limb, the tree seals it, and the canopy keeps its shape at a reduced size. This is what Australian Standard AS 4373 describes and what a competent arborist quotes.

Topping cuts limbs to stubs wherever the desired height happens to be. It is faster, it is cheaper on the day, and it triggers dense epicormic regrowth attached only in the outer wood. Within five to ten years that regrowth is heavier and more failure-prone than the limbs it replaced, and you pay again.

If two quotes on the same tree differ dramatically, the first thing to establish is which of these two jobs each one is describing.

Indicative ranges

For straightforward suburban work, a basic trim on a medium tree runs in the order of $150 to $400, while more extensive pruning involving shaping or substantial branch removal ranges from about $400 to $800. Lopping a small tree sits around $200 to $500. Larger trees needing more labour and specialised equipment run from roughly $800 to $2,000 or more.

Those are ranges, not quotes. A mature eucalypt over a heritage roof on a battle-axe block sits above all of them, and an honest operator will say so at the inspection rather than after.

What moves the number

Access. The dominant factor in Sydney. A tree the chipper can park beside is a different job from one behind a terrace with a 900mm side gate where every piece is carried by hand. Battle-axe handles, gully blocks and clifftop properties all add hours before a single cut is made.

Canopy size and species. Not height — volume. A wide, dense camphor laurel produces far more material than a tall narrow gum of the same height, and camphor chip is wet and heavy. Eucalypt timber is dense and awkward to handle but chips into less volume.

How much is coming off. Working practice caps a season's reduction at roughly a quarter of the live crown on a mature tree. Larger reductions get staged across two or three years, which is better for the tree and means two visits rather than one.

What is underneath. A canopy over open lawn can be dropped. A canopy over a pool, a pergola or a glass roof has to be rigged and lowered piece by piece.

Green waste. Chip carted away costs more than chip blown onto your garden beds. If you want the mulch, it is free material and it saves the tipping.

Council requirements. In strict areas, significant pruning needs approval and sometimes a paid arborist report. That sits outside the tree quote entirely.

Where a cheap quote hides the money

Ask specifically whether the price includes removing all green waste, and ask to see current public liability insurance. Those are the two most common exclusions, and the second one is the only saving in this trade that can cost you a roof.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why is lopping sometimes more expensive than removal?

Because removal can be a one-way job and lopping cannot. Felling or dismantling a tree lets the crew work downward and take what falls. Reduction pruning means a climber moving through a live canopy placing selective cuts, lowering pieces clear of the tree they are standing in, and leaving a structure that still has to look right. It is slower and more skilled.

Is it cheaper to prune every year or every few years?

Every few years, usually, for structural work. Annual reduction on a vigorous species just feeds a cycle of regrowth. The exception is clearance from roofs, gutters and solar panels on fast-growing species, which is cheap each time and expensive to let go, and deadwooding on mature eucalypts, which is worth doing regularly.
